He started playing football in the Ruston High School, Louisiana, and he was given the name of ‘The Ruston Rifle.’ He also played college football while studying at the Louisiana State University, better known as LSU. He was announced as the NFL Most Valuable Player in the year 1976 while he was playing for the Colts. He was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in the year 2016.

Bert Jones was born Bertram Hays Jones on 7th September 1951 in Ruston, Louisiana. He went to the LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and played for the LSU Tigers Football Team. After starting college, he started performing quite amazingly in the sport and became one of the best players in his college. In the year 1971, he had nine touchdowns and threw for more than 945 yards. LSU fans want him to handle some other position, but he was forced to play as a quarterback because of the head coach of their team.

One of the biggest moments of his college career when he took the last-second win for his team in the LESU vs. Ole Miss Game in 1972. Some people believe there were some issues with the clock, which gave Bert four extra seconds to complete the touchdown and get the victory for his team.

Career beginning 

If we talk about the professional career of Jones, it started in the year 1973 when he was drafted and was the first quarterback to be drafted. He was picked in the second overall pick by the Baltimore Colts team. His first match was against Cleveland Browns on 16th September 1973, and his team lost it. He played for the Colts for eight years, and during that period, he won three back-to-back AFC East Division titles for the team, but they lost in the playoffs of all those years. In the years 1978 and 1979, he had to miss most of the games due to a shoulder injury, and his team got the last position in those two seasons.

The 1976 season was the best one in the professional career of Bert Jones as he had 24 touchdowns and threw for over 3100 yards which were his career-best. There were only three quarterbacks at that time who got the 100+ passer rating, and Bert was one of them as he got the rating of 102.5. In 1976, he was also honored as the NFL Most Valuable Players in 1976 as well as the NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
