In the year 1982, he led the team as the captain and took them to the victory with a record of 9-2-1 during the Bluebonnet Bowl while playing against Florida. He did around 299 tackles throughout his career and is the Arkansas record holder for the career tackles for loss, which is 63. He was also the part of Arkansas All-Decade Team announced in 1993 and was also voted for the Arkansas All-Century Team. He was also honoured by being inducted into the Razorback Hall of Honour and the Arkansas State Hall of Fame. In 2000, he became a part of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Billy’s professional football career started in 1983 when he joined the San Diego Chargers. He was the fifth pick of the 1st Round and was the first defensive player picked during that draft.
