Career Beginning
Saturday Night Live’s prominent show was going through a revamp and started hiring new comedians and staff. Gottfried noticed his change, and the producers saw Gottfried’s talent and decided to include him in the sixth season. The persona of Gottfried in the sketches of SNL was incredibly different from what he was characterized later. He never spoke but instead resided to his trademark screeches and obnoxious voices. During his twelve-episode sketches, he acquired incredibly low airtime. He recalled a point in an interview where he performed as a literal corpse in a drawing regarding sports. He still had a reoccurring character named Leo Waxman. He has made two other impressions of David Stockman and Roman Polanski, a very controversial movie director.
Gottfried has also performed the role of Sidney Bernstein, an accountant in Beverly Hills Cop 2, which came out in 1987. After his performance in SNL, this movie gave him and Eddie Murphy a chance to reunite.

Gottfried met Dara Kravitz in the late 1990s at the Award party of Grammy. They finally got married in 2007, and they have two children named Lily and Max. Arlene Gottfried, an NYC street photographer, was Gilbert’s sister, and she passed away in 2017.
