Mattew Abram Groening is the most talented American cartoonist, animator, producer, and writer. He is the producer of Life in Hell, a comic strip, and some television series including Disenchantment, The Simpsons, and Futurama. Out of all television series, The Simpsons is the one that is the longest television series of the U.S. in history.

Early Life

Matt Groening was born and bought up in Portland, Oregon, on 15th February 1954. He has five siblings, and he is the middle of all five. His mother was a teacher, and his father was a writer, cartoonist, advertiser, and filmmaker. Matt completed his studies at Ainsworth Elementary School and completed his graduation from Lincoln High School. After completed graduation, he attended The Evergreen State College of Washington. The Evergreen State College is an art school that Matt portrayed as a college that admits every weirdo, and there are no required classes or grades. 

He drew cartoons and wrote articles for The Cooper Point Journal as he was appointed as the newspaper editor. Matt befriended his friends’ cartoonist, Lynda Barry, who wrote letters to Joseph Heller and received a reply.

Career Beginnings

After turning 23, in 1977, Matt shifted to Los Angeles to start writing professionally and become a writer. He described that he went through “the series of lousy jobs” as he was extra in movie entitles When Every Day Was the Fourth of July, cleaning tables, washing and drying dishes in a nursing home, clerking at Hollywood Licorice Pizza, chauffeuring, landscaping and ghostwriting.

He described life in a self-made comic book titled “Life in Hell,” as he was inspired by “How to Go to Hell,” a book by Walter Kaufmann. In 1978, Groening made his first sale of the professional cartoon to Wet magazine. His comic book “Life in Hell” got the attention of Hollywood and other popular founders.

The Simpsons shorts appeared first in The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. Grampa Simpson, another family member, was introduced in Simpsons shorts, but Groening refused to name it after the name of his grandfather named Abraham Groening. 

Personal Life

Matt Groening got married to Deborah Caplan in 1986. The couple has two sons named Abe and Homer. Over time, things didn’t go well and in 1999, both divorced. In 2007, Groening met Agustina Picasso. After having a relationship of four long years, Argentine artists and finally got married in 2011. Picasso got pregnant, and in 2014, she gave birth to Nathaniel Philip Picasso Groening.

In 2018, Matt became the father of twins named Venus Ruth and Sol Matthew, and they announced this through Instagram. He is an active member of Democratic Party candidates and made many campaign contributions. Laurie Monnes Anderson, the cousin of Matt, was a member of Oregon State Senate and represented eastern Multnomah County.
