Ruben was born on 12 September 1978 in Frankfurt, Germany. His parents are American, as his father was in the US army. He spent his childhood in Birmingham as his father was posted there. He sang for the first time in the Rising Star Baptist Church. He followed his passion for singing with gospel performances in the church. He studied in Huffman High School, where he also played football, and he was so good at it that he got a scholarship to Alabama A&M University from it.
