Billy Sims was a football player by profession who played in NFL. He played for over five seasons in the league. When he was in college, he played football for Oklahoma University, and during that time span, he became the consensus All-time American two times and also in 1978 he won Heisman Trophy. In 1980, he became the first pick in the NFL draft as well as started his professional football career with the Detroit Lions. Till 2010, he was the only Oklahoma player who was taken as the first pick in the NFL draft. He earned the name ‘Kung Fu Billy Sims’, which was given to him by Chris Berman.
Early life
Billy’s full name is Billy Ray Sims, and he was born on September 18, 1955, in St. Louis, Missouri. He spent a few of the initial years of his life there but shifted to Hooks, Texas, when he was in the 8TH grade and lived there with his grandmother. Billy loved baseball since his childhood and was a huge fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was not at all interested in football until he shifted to Texas. He have fun playing varsity football for three at the Hooks School and rushed for over 1128 times. He rushed for over 100 yards in 38 games which is the third all-time Texas school record. Later, he went to the University of Oklahoma and played one game in 1975 but had to stay out for the rest games due to an injury. He struggled with injuries for the next half-season, too and rushed for 545 yards in the next two seasons.

Career beginning
He started his college football career with the University of Oklahoma and played under coach Barry Switzer. If we talk about his professional career, it started in 1980 when he got picked by the Detroit Lions. He spent his complete career with the same team and made it to the Pro Bowl in 1980, 1981, 1982. Billy Sims was doing quite good in football, but his career got ended suddenly in the 1984 season as he went through a right knee injury. He ended his career with 186 receptions for over 2000 yards, and 1131 carries for 5000 yards.
He didn’t give up and tried for two years to get he knew fixed and return back to the game but failed and announced his retirement in 1986. He is one of the most popular and loved sports personalities in Detroit. His jersey was worn by Barry Sanders for five years after he retired, and then it was also officially retired.
